Stream Health
Assessments

Learn more about how Stream Health Assessments are
conducted, and what information can be obtained.

The video below provides an insight into what we do and what tests we use during a stream health assessment . We utilise the NIWA’s Stream Health Monitoring Assessment Kit (SHMAK) to understand stream composition, water clarity, invertebrate life, temperature, and conductivity of the catchment. This is paired with Hills Laboratories Farm Surface Water Quality Monitoring kit which samples dissolved fractions of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Ecoli and suspended sediment. An eDNA sample is also taken at each site. A bonus of using these methods is that these are the methods required for industry certification programmes such as NZFAP+ and ZQRX.

HDLG now owns five SHMAK kits and our Catchment Farm Advisors can undertake both stream health assessments and macroinvertebrate counts (for NZFAP+) if you require – please get in touch with your CFA if you require a stream health assessment or would like to learn more.
