About Us

HDLG is a catchment group which supports farmers as they navigate an increasingly complex operating environment while protecting their land, water and native biodiversity for future generations.

Our Story

Established in 2016, the Hurunui District Landcare Group is an independent catchment group of over 300 North Canterbury farmers. The group is run as an incorporated society to support farmers as they navigate an increasingly complex operating environment while sustainably managing their natural resources.

HDLG has a reputable history of front-footing environmental requirements and through its last project Future Hurunui, was able to provide one-on-one support which grew membership from 133 in 2017 to 323 in 2023. The project highlighted the importance of protecting and enhancing the region's natural resources while documenting actions that aimed to reduce a farm's environmental footprint. Future Hurunui project outputs included:

  • Over 300 Farm Environment Plans completed on member properties.
  • Establishing practical Intensive Winter Grazing Plans.
  • Calculated GHG numbers and providing advice on what this means for individuals operations
  • Tailored advice on specialist topics such as ETS, protecting wetlands and native planting.
  • Facilitation of special interest groups.

HDLG has also run a One Billion Trees project through Te Uru Rākau which enabled 65 hectares of native forest and 15.5 hectares (17km) of riparian planting on member farms, contributing to the enhancement of native biodiversity and regeneration throughout the Hurunui District.

Outside of these projects, HDLG has contributed to the Plan Change 1 (PC1) process which was approved under the Hurunui Waiau River Regional Plan (HWRRP). This enabled "dryland" farming to be a permitted activity and played a crucial role in ensuring regulatory settings were practical, equitable and able to be implemented. HDLG has also partnered with Environment Canterbury to develop and deliver the first Hill Country Erosion programme (SCAR) in Canterbury since the end of the Catchment Boards. Hundreds of hectares of highly erodible land has now been stabilised and protected as a result, further increasing the districts resilience into the future.
